Pet Assisted Therapy

What is Pet Assisted Therapy?

Pet Assisted Therapy, also known as Animal Assisted Therapy, is simply psychotherapy enhanced by the use of an animal. At Stone Styled Therapy, we can incorporate the use of our therapy dog, Dr. Maslow, at any session. Sometimes having a pet sitting next to you can help you feel calm, safe and protected.

Who Needs Pet Assisted Therapy?

Anyone who has trouble feeling safe may benefit from the addition of a therapy dog. For many, petting and touching an animal generates a feeling of comfort and this can ultimately progress the psychotherapy.

Most Popular Questions

Pet therapy works simply by informing your therapist that you'd like to incorporate Dr. Maslow into your psychotherapy sessions. You are then welcome to have him sit beside you, or you are welcome to get on the floor beside him and pet him, cuddle him or  just have him near you. You decide if you want him with you the entire session, or just part of it.
Anyone who feels comfortable with animals is welcome to try it. Research studies https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6336278/ have shown that pet assisted therapy improved the efficacy of mental health treatments. Other research supports that animal assisted therapy helps to alleviate symptoms of PTSD and other mental health conditions.
